7 Types of Local goats


There are 7 types of local goats that have been successfully identified. It is estimated there are more local goats which are not yet known. Some may already extinct. It is really hard situation as local researcher believe the unknown types of goats have great potential to increase the genetic quality of the known local goats. Here are seven types of local goats known to people:
  1. Marica Goat.
    Marica goats was live in the province of South Sulawesi. It is a type of local goats which is in the high level of being extinct. This type of Goat able to adapt with new environment including dry land. Marica able to live only by eating few dry grass. This Goat able to live with extreme condition. The Goat was about to extinct because of the human take them as food and didn’t breed them properly. The most distinctive characteristic of this goat is relatively small ears and short upright ears compared to other goats. Has short horns and small. This goat is very agile and move aggressively.
  2. Samosir Goat.
    Samosir Goat goat is widely available in the island of Samosir at North Sumatra. Samosir is always used in the ceremony at a religious event by the locals. There is special requirement to use this goat in ceremony. It has to be white-colored and healthy. This is the min reason why only white colored goat available in wide population. Samosir Goat able to live in extreme season where the dry may last longer. It able to survive just by consuming dry weeds in the mountain. Even with very low grass, it wouldn’t die. Local people still breeding this goat and the availability is abundant.
  3. Muara Goat.
    A local goat found in Muara, a small area in North Sumatra. The color varies from reddish and brown. Sometimes there is white and black fur around the body. it has more weight than the other goats. During a single birth it may has two until four babies. The great thing about this goat is all the babies will survive even without necessary treatment. A good local goat for breeding.
  4. Kosta Goat.
    Costa goat deployment location is around Jakarta and Banten. This goat was reported to have a moderate body, flat nose and sometimes curved, short horns and also short fur. This goat supposedly formed from Peanut and Kashmir goat (imported from Kashmir). Local research shown the color distribution of this goat is dark brown to black. With the highest percentage of black (61%), dark chocolate (20%), brown (10.2%), red brown (5.8%), and gray (3.4%). Body color pattern generally consists of two colors, and the part that is dominated by white stripes.
  5. Gembrong Goat.
    This goat originally come from eastern areas of Bali, especially Karangasem Regency. A unique feature of this goat is the long-haired fur. The feather is about 15-25 cm in range, sometimes the hair on the head will cover the face and ears. Male has taller hair/fur while female only has 2-3 cm. For color, Gembrong goat usually have white (61.5%) partly brown (23.08%) and brown (15.38%) colors. It has single color with percentage of 69.23% and two or three colors both at 15.38%. Gembrong Goat has moderate difficulty to breed. It need extra precaution as it may unable to survive during extreme seasons. However, many people prefer to use this goat as their primary cattle.
  6. Local Ettawa Goat (PE).
    This goat is the result of a cross breeding between an Ettawa Goat from India with local goat (Peanut goat). It looks almost similar with Ettawa but it is smaller in term of size. Local Ettawa is good for its milk and meat. The characteristic of this goats is it has convex curved shape of the face and chin beard, there dewlap under the neck that comes from a growing beard, ear length, flaccid hang and ends slightly pleated, slightly curved horns, tall and flat. The hair grown long on the neck and shoulders.
  7. Peanut Goat.
    This goat naturally live in Indonesia, Malaysia and Philippines. It only available in those three countries. The only goat originally available in local area. This goat breed very fast. At the age of 15-18 months it able to have babies. It suitable to produce meat and skin. the goat is prolific, agile and resistant to various conditions. It also able to adapt very well in a variety of different environments including extreme conditions.
From the seven local goats above, only local Ettawa and Muara have big size. For medium size, there are Costa and Gembrong Goats. The smaller size are Samosir, marica and Peanut goats. Currently there are another goats still not being identified by the local research. We do hope in few years later, those goats will be identified and able to be used genetically to improve current goats.
